Jessie Montgomery: Starburst

Violinist and composer Jessie Montgomery has long been associated with the Sphinx Organization, the Detroit-based nonprofit created to increase representation of Black and Latinx musicians in the classical music world. Originally conceived for string quartet in 2012, Starburst explodes off the stage in this version for string orchestra with all of Montgomery's trademark virtuosity.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Adagio and Fugue in C minor

Fascinated by the work of his forebears Bach and Handel, Mozart first composed this deeply-considered Adagio and Fugue for two pianos, then adapted it for string quartet. Performed by string orchestra, it showcases a mature Mozart at the height of his powers.
Caroline Shaw: Entr’acte

From her imaginative string quartets and vocal works to collaborations with Kanye West, Caroline Shaw's compositions have straddled medium and genre. Entr'acte began as a string quartet inspired by Haydn's own Op. 77 No. 2 quartet. Shifting colors and softly pulsating rhythms define this popular twenty-first century work, often performed by small string orchestra.
Franz Schubert: Rondo in A major

Solo violin takes the forefront of this one-movement Schubert work of 1816. Sweetly tuneful melodies, contrasts between light and dark, and abundant opportunity for artistic interpretation make this piece an immensely gratifying work both to play and to hear.
